What are lash extensions?

Lash extensions are an advantageous option for women that want longer and thicker lashes. Also, you avoid having to use makeup every day to reach the same result, because you won’t need mascara anymore if you do this procedure. The hair by hair lashes are applied at 1 mm distance from the root of each natural hair.

You have to take into consideration that the lashes natural regeneration process will continue like normal, meaning that extensions will fall together with the natural hair, thus you will require a touchup appointment every 2-3 weeks. This procedure can only be done by a professional because it requires a lot of precaution and they have to respect the hygiene rules to prevent any rashes.

The average lash extension that you will find on the market is between 6-16 mm. There are some lashes that are longer than 16 mm, but these are generally used at special occasions and aren’t recommended to be worn day to day. A really important role in choosing the lash extensions are their thickness and curvature. We can choose between different thicknesses of 0.03-0.20 and there is also a great diversity in curvatures such as: J, B, C, CC, D, L, L+, M.

We choose the lash extensions length, thickness and curvatures based on the desired effect and volume.

There are the following extension types:

  • Hair by hair lash extensions – where a single fake lash is applied on a natural one. The recommended thicknesses are: 0.10 ,0.12 and 0.15 (it also varies on how thick the natural lashes are on which they will be applied). We don’t recommend that you work with the same curvature over the entire eye length in order to avoid an inaesthetic final look.

  • 2D lash extensions – they apply 2 fake lashes on each natural lash. The recommended thicknesses for this type are: 0.07, 0.10, 0.12.

  • 3D lash extensions – they apply 3 fake lashes on each natural lash. The recommended thicknesses are: 0.05, 0.07, 0.10

  • The Hollywood lashes – they apply from 4 up to 15 fake lashes on each natural lash. This procedure requires a bit more attention, especially when choosing the correct thicknesses. Depending on the thickness of the natural lashes and their overall health, you have to choose thicknesses as small as possible, so that the total number of applied lashes on a natural lash weigh maximum double compared to the lash you’re applying them. We recommend taking a break of 2 months per year with this type. Recommended thicknesses are: 0.03, 0.05, 0.07.

What is the lash extension applying process?

First of all, you have to take into account the fact that the procedure for applying the lash extensions, when done by a professional lash artist, it shouldn’t cause any sort of physical discomfort. Even though there are multiple different applying techniques, these are the steps that generally are followed:

Removing the makeup, degreasing around the eyes, applying the strips over the inferior lashes, applying the extensions by using special tweezers, combing the lashes and ungluing the used strips or patches.

Techniques for applying the extensions

Depending on the type of extension chosen together with the lash artist, there are various different applying techniques in order to reach the desired result. For instance, the technique to apply hair by hair is used at the 1D, 2D and 3D extensions. Even if during the 2D and 3D procedure they apply 2 and 3 extensions over each natural hair, they will be applied in turn.

If the extensions are larger than 3D (up until 12D), you have to use the volume technique. This means that a whole fan of lashes will be applied on a single natural hair. This is why it’s important that they don’t have more volume than the eyelid can support because they can cause discomfort and they will also fall much quicker.

Even if you want a dramatic lash look, talk with your lash artist and make the best decision together.

Eye hygiene after applying the extensions

It’s essential to know everything about lash extensions, before and after application, so you can ensure a proper hygiene. For sure, your lash artist will give you some useful tips, which you have to keep in mind if you want your extensions to last for as long as possible and to avoid rashes. Here are the main rules that you must follow:

- remove makeup daily by using a product that’s based on water and not oil. After 48 hours after application, it’s important to clean them daily in order to remove any dust residues and also makeup that can accumulate in time.

- brush them using a special brush, but take care that you don’t apply too much pressure. If you want to clean them in depth, you can wet the brush beforehand. Do the movements from the base towards the tip.

- if you want to dry them after exposing them to humidity, gently swab them with a soft towel. Avoid any disks because the residues can damage them.

- don’t use the lash curler or mascara that contains oil or that’s waterproof. If however, you will want to fix them with the help of makeup products, make sure that the oil isn’t among the ingredients, because it can easily unstick the extension glue

- don’t take any hot baths and avoid the sauna because excessive heat can negatively impact the glue’s strength, which will lead to the lash extensions coming off

Take our tips into consideration and follow the caring instructions properly. After everything you’ve found out about lash extensions, all that’s left to do is to choose the best ones for you.
